One of the most difficult positions to play in the NBA, or even in all of basketball, has always been the wing. The main reason is that there has never really been a truly defined role that the wing position is asked to perform. Point guards or shooting guards who could double as playmakers are asked to handle the ball, create plays for others, and score the ball from the perimeter. Meanwhile, big men such as power forwards and centers have always been the ones tasked to score inside, rebound, and defend the paint even though modern big men are now shooting and handling the ball.But while other positions in the NBA have well-defined roles or are asked to fit into certain types of roles, depending on what the team needs and on a certain player’s skills, the same could not be said about wing players such as shooting guards and small forwards. If you look at it, there never really was a defined role that these players had to play—not from the very beginning when basketball started. And this position has evolved so much over the years that it can be truly difficult to say what wing players have to do for their respective teams.Wings of the 60s and 70s were mainly asked to shoot from the perimeter while players like Julius Erving, Michael Jordan, and Clyde Drexler brought the high-flying and high-scoring type of wing during their prime years. Then there were Scottie Pippen, Grant Hill, and LeBron James, who all became all-around wings that could do anything. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony came into the league as isolation scoring wings. As such, you could never really tell what a wing player would bring to a team, given the fact that the position never really had an exact role. They could shoot from the perimeter, use their athleticism to attack the basket, make isolation plays, defend at an excellent level, act as point forwards, or do anything and everything their team needs from them.
